What is Geo+?

Geo+ is Axcient’s solution for geo-redundant storage.

Geo+ creates a secondary copy of your restore points (in a geographically separate location from your primary location).

This protects you against a site-wide disaster at your primary site.

Availability

  • Geo+ became generally available in December 2024
  • Geo+ is being offered to our US-based partners who are using Axcient vaults.
  • Replication is between your primary region and your secondary region. For example, if your existing primary vault is in our SLC Data Center, then your secondary Geo+ copy  will live in our ATL Data Center.

How to enable & disable Geo+

Geo-redundancy can be enabled at either

(a) the client level or

(b) the protected system level.

See instructions below for details:

Enable/disable Geo+ at the client level

Note: If enabling at the client level, your protected systems will also inherit those client-level settings.

STEP 1.  Log in to x360Recover and go to the Clients tab on your Dashboard.

STEP 2. In the lower right navigation panel, review the Geo+ Summary section, to see if Geo+ is currently enabled. The default will be Disabled.

STEP 3. When you are ready to enable Geo+, click on the Enable Geo+ button under the Actions menu on the top right:

3.a. Once you have selected a client, click on Settings.

When the Client Settings window opens, you will see that Geo+ is defaulted at Don’t inherit from Client settings

3b. You can change this selection by clicking the Edit button on the lower right:

Note: If you are enabling at the client level, your protected systems will also inherit these client-level settings.

3c. If you wish to change this setting, you can select

Don’t inherit from client settings

OR

Enable for all of this client’s protected systems

OR

Disable for all of this client’s protected systems

3d. Click Save to complete this change.

You will see a confirmation window, which contains a reminder about the charges for Geo+.

STEP 4. Click Enable Geo+ to proceed.

In the future, when you add a new protected system, it  will automatically have Geo+ enabled.

STEP 5. To disable Geo+, use the same selection method discussed above and select the disabled option. Be sure to Save when you are done.

You will see a confirmation that Geo+ has been disabled here:

3.b. When you click on Enable Geo+, a popup screen will ask you to confirm your selection:

Note: There is a charge for Geo+ and the popup contains a reminder of this.

Now that you have enabled Geo+, info will appear in the lower right navigation panel.

Review the Geo+ Summary section, to verify that Geo+ is currently enabled.

You will also be able to see if client settings have been inherited, the date of the user's last primary restore point (RP) and the last redundant restore point.

Geo+ reporting

You can find reporting information about which of your protected systems have Geo+ enabled by using the Download (csv) report from the Devices page.

  • This Download (csv) button generates an Excel report with a new column Geo+ that has Boolean values:
    • TRUE if Geo+ is enabled
    • FALSE if Geo+ NOT enabled

This information can be used to calculate your monthly billable usage.

Geo+ auditing

Geo+ enablement and disablement is tracked with the Recover Manager Auditor report under "Setting Update" action. Changes are audited at both the client and protected system level.

How to recover using Geo+

NOTE: In the event you lose access to your primary restore point, please contact Axcient Support.

  • The initial release of Geo+ will not support direct access to your secondary copy. In the case of primary storage failure, our Axcient support team will be happy to assist you with recoveries using Geo+

IMPORTANT key points

  • Your replication location is based on your existing vault's primary location. It is not possible for you to choose where to replicate data or to change your primary region.
  • Your Geo+ restore point copy will be deleted if Geo+ is disabled or if the primary copy is deleted.
  • All deleted restore points will go through the Axcient AirGap process.
  • Secondary restore points inherit the same retention policies as the primary restore points.
  • Geo+ runs a scheduled job every hour to check for new restore points to copy to the secondary location
  • Secondary restore points are displayed on the Backup Summary Report for additional visibility
  • Geo+ is not included in Fair Use calculations.

FAQs

Q: Is there an additional cost associated with enabling Geo+?
A: Yes, now that Geo+ is generally available,  there is an additional cost. Geo+ is billed based on days of usage per each protected system that is enabled. If Geo+ is enabled, disabled or re-enabled throughout the month, dates of usage will be reported and billed.

For more information about cost for Geo+ please contact your Partner Success Manager. You can locate contact information for your Partner Success Manager here:

Q: Do I have to turn on Geo+ for all my customers or protected systems? Or can I choose when or where to use it?
A: You have a choice. You can turn on Geo+ only for client's and protected data that need geo-redundancy.

Q: Who can enable Geo+?
A: Org Admins will have ability to enable Geo+ at both the protected system level and the client level.

Q: Who is eligible to use Geo+?
A: Our initial release will be open to US-based partners.

Q: How can I recover from my geo-redundant copy?
A: For our initial rollout, recoveries are done through Axcient support. We are considering adding the ability for you to self-recover in the future.

Q: Which restore points will be replicated to my secondary region?
A:  All existing and future restore points will be copied to your secondary region.

Q: When I enable Geo+, will it take and replicate a new full back up or will it just start from the newest restore point, even if it is an incremental?
A:  All existing restore points will be copied to your secondary region.

Q: Aren’t my x360Recover backups already replicated?
A: If you are using appliance-based x360Recover, you control the configuration to replicate your data. Geo+ opens the same opportunity if you are using Direct-to-Cloud deployments of x360Recover.

Q: Can I use Geo+ for my appliance backups?
A:  Yes! If you are replicating your appliance backups to an Axcient vault, you can enable Geo+ to replicate those to your secondary region.
