Overview

You can view your disk usage on the home page of the web portal, on the system status page of the backup manager, in the disk usage inspector tool, and at the end of each backup log file.

Types of Data

Your online backup account stores three types of data: current data, historical data, and deleted data. Your total disk usage is the sum of all of these three types. The disk usage inspector tool can you identify which folders contain the most of each type of data. Here is an explanation of each type of data:

• Current data is information required to store the current versions of all of your files in your backup set. The Visualize! dialog on the Folders page of the backup manager should display a total estimated amount that roughly matches the amount of current data in your account.
• Historical data is information required to store the changed data blocks previous versions of files that still exist on your computer. Only the changes between versions are stored. Files that change frequently (such as Exchange information stores) or large files that are rewritten often (such as very large .zip files) can contribute towards high levels of historical disk usage. Use this tool to quickly identify which directories contain files with the largest historical deltas. You can then customize your backup settings for just these folders or files to store less historical information, if desired (to customize, right click the folder on the Folders page in the backup manager and choose Properties).
• Deleted data is information required to store the current and historical versions of files that were once backed up but then were subsequently deleted from your computer. The backup then retains these deleted files in the data center for as long as you have configured it to do so according to the Versioning settings on the Options page in the backup manager.

Web Portal Home Page

Open the web portal by clicking the Web Portal button on the Control Panel page of the Backup Manager. Login with your username and password.

If your username and password were correct, you will be taken to the Web Portal home page. If you have JavaScript enabled, you will see a graph showing how your total disk usage changed over time.

You will also see your current disk usage level in the Account Summary section.

System Status Page in Backup Manager

Open the Backup Manager and click the System Status page icon. The Disk Usage panel will show your total amount of disk usage for both your account and all sub-accounts related to your account. Additionally, the Reports tab will show graphs of how your disk usage has changed over time and how much each type of data (current, historical, deleted) is contributing towards your account usage.

Disk Usage Inspector Tool

The disk usage inspector tool is designed to help you understand which directories are contributing the most towards your current, historical, and deleted disk usage. This tool displays for each directory stored in the backup the amount of each type of data for that folder and all of its subfolders. This lets you quickly drill down and determine which folders are building up large amounts of each type of data and then you can take corrective action, if needed. The tool is started by going to the Control Panel page in the backup manager, and clicking the Disk Usage Inspector button.

The first page of the disk usage inspector tool displays the login page. If you have configured local backups, the server drop down list will also contain selections for the local server or local disk backup destinations. Additionally, you can also select a different filesystem path that contains locally backed up data by using the restore from disk field.

The next page of the tool displays the disk usage information. This page first downloads the list of all folders contained on the server. Once downloaded, it will display the folders along with several columns of information.

Columns of information:

• # Files: The number of files in this directory and all of its subdirectories.
• # Versions: The number of versions of files in this directory and all of its subdirectories (includes the number of historical versions).
• Size: The amount of current data in just this directory.
• Total Size: The amount of current data in this directory and all of its subdirectories.
• Deleted Size: The amount of deleted data in this directory and all of its subdirectories.
• Size of Versions: The amount of historical data in this directory and all of its subdirectories.

Backup Log File

1. Open the Backup Manager and click the System Status page icon.
2. Double click the latest Backup log entry to open the log file in the Log Viewer.
3. Hit the end button to scroll to the end of the log file.

The information will look similar to the following:

The last line shows you the total amount of disk space that you're using followed by your disk usage quota (which may be infinite). You can also use the log viewer to filter for entries containing 'MB]' which will show you a list of all large uploads.
